Getting to know the staff at The Hosta Hideaway Nursery and Gardens of York
Springs PA, Charles Seitz, Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Charles, what are your primary responsibilities at THH? As CEO, I am
responsible for finalizing the hosta and statuary orders, and for organizing the
statuary and hostas in the selling areas. I am also the primary garden designer
for THH. Additionally I handle social media for the business including writing
posts and taking photos. Oh, and I pack our customer’s vehicles with their
purchases!
What do you like most about running THH? It is so rewarding to see our
customers excited to visit THH and having so much fun exploring the nursery and
gardens. I also enjoy sitting down with people and helping them design and lay
out their gardens. And like Donna, I try to find time each day to enjoy the wonder
of the hosta nursery.
What do you look forward to each spring? It is really satisfying to lay out the
nursery and selling areas each year so that our customers have a new and fresh
experience each time they visit.
What might be something that the customers at THH do not know about you?
I find pleasure in reading, writing and taking photos. Additionally, I enjoy history,
and I collect antique dog doorstops and bookends.
Charles, what did you do before THH? After receiving my Masters in social work
and my Ph.D. in counseling, I spent the first part of my career as a social worker
and then as a professor. And I learned along the way how healthy a garden is for
the soul.
Charles, do you have any final thoughts about THH that you would like to share?
I am so thankful that my journey has led me to walk out our front door each day
and into the nursery and gardens, and to spend time with my beautiful wife
Donna and our gifted son Chuck, and the most wonderful and appreciative
customer friends in the world. And I also know that “neither the one who plants
nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.”
(1 Corinthians 3:7, NIV)
